The Numeracy through Football Initiative © was launched in September 2005 and has been delivered in over 100 Primary Schools in Lancashire and Greater Manchester.
Educational Initiatives was something we as a company wanted to develop. We had many ideas of possible ways in which football and numeracy could be linked.
After meetings with many head teachers, the feedback we received from them was extremely positive. Many of which said that this idea was “exactly what could and would get children into learning and enjoying numeracy through such a powerful tool like football”.
We then began designing the initiative, with a little help from Numeracy Co-ordinators, as well as professional footballers.
After months of planning, the initiative was successfully completed in the summer of 2005, and launched in September 2005.
What does it consist of?
The Numeracy through Football Initiative © is a 16-page, colour, A4 booklet. The booklet has 4 very different, challenging tasks throughout, all of which covered the majority of the numeracy curriculum.
We cover areas such as Number Bonds, Doubles, Problem Solving, Column Addition, Handling data in a table, as well as other areas such as Scale and Co-ordinates and Fixtures & Calendars.
The Initiative has been developed for both Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2) as well as Key Stage 2 (Year 3 – 6).

We at The Football Development Programme © understand that budgets are limited and we do our upmost to accomodate each and every School.
There are various ways in which you as a School can generate funding. These can include:
- Parental Contribution – Non Uniform / Fun / Themed Day. This may include 50p / £1 Donation from Parents for each Child
- Use of the PE School Sports Premium Funding
- Numeracy / P.E Budget – 50% from each Budget can be used
- PTFA – Parent Teachers Friends Association – This often Raises Money for Beneficial and Educational Projects such as this
- The Disadvantaged Children’s Fund – Schools can access Funds for Disadvantaged Children
